A fantastic tour of the seasonal secret spots discovered through years of foraging the West Cork Seashore and its environs.
10:00am THE KEEP
You will be welcomed in to the famous Smokery of Sally Ferns Barnes for a hearty mug of tea or coffee, and conversation about what it means to have been working with sea-life in a peripheral coastal community in West Cork for the last 40 years.
10:30 am THE KEEP
You will learn about different varieties of sea creatures and plants which are native to these shores and very delicious, as well as learning the wonderfully strange traits and attributes of each, depending on seasonality.
11:00 am THE COAST
Armed with knowledge of the your intended catch, shrimping nets, penknives, canvas foraging bags and thermii for more hot blackberry leaf tea, you will head out in convoy to Sally’s secret foraging marks.
11:30 am THE COAST
Weather/seasonality depending, you will be shown how to identify and harvest amongst Sea Beet, Sea Kale, Sea Radish, Pennywort, Herb Robert, Scurvygrass, Brown Shrimp, Common Prawn, Periwinkles, Shore Crabs, Brown Crabs, Gutweed, Sugar Kelp, Chanterelles, Amethyst Deceivers, and many others, hopping between secret locations. You may or may not be blindfolded.
13:00 am THE BEACH / THE KEEP
Weather depending, you will either set up a beach fire for some fire cooking, or head back to the Smokery to enjoy the fruits of your labour, with Sally’s tried and tested cooking methods for a magnificent lunch.
